Typical nostalgia hits when you get the chance
to review your goals and realize that you did not hit any of them. Why so? You
will prod yourself over and over again trying to figure out when the rain
started beating you only to realize that it started beating you when it started
raining. A study was done and over 100 elderly people were asked- some on
their death beds, what they regretted in the life they lived. A staggering 94% of
them all claimed to regret the opportunities once missed and the things they
never did. Today, I’d like to dive deep into the abyss of missed opportunities,
shots not taken, goals not achieved and chances lost.
We all envision ourselves in the future
probably sipping chardonnay on a beach waving subtly at the bar tender to get
you more sun cream or sitting in your Range rover and doing 100 in a 60 km
lane. I would call them fantasies and dreams. Fantasy if this happens during
the day and dream if you see this at night. Getting there is not easy and we
all know that, but what gets me most is the fact that we all know the path we
have to take to get there. We all know what we need to start doing, continue
doing or stop doing. Often, we fall short of our expectations and we hope that
we can find someone to blame for this other than ourselves.
Opportunities are ever fleeting and chances are
ever dodgy. Looking out into the world, we have numerous opportunities that we
just let fly by. It is by mere luck that we realize we have just lost an
opportunity since most do not even realize how these unfold right in front of
our eyes. This is not to say that opportunities are leprechauns in a rainbow,
no in fact, opportunities are usually in plain sight to those that open their
eyes and those that listen.
Our lives are all set out in goals and visions
and almost all are set in grandeur nevertheless, we tend not to get the best
out of them. It might be common sense to say that it is easy to know what you
need to start and continue doing to achieve your goals but most of the time,
you may need to step aside and re-evaluate your current progress. Goals are
measured in the progress and once progress is achieved, then you can definitely
know that you are one step closer to your goals. Goals are easier achieved when
you have a full sense of direction and planning. This involves breaking down
your goals into achievable tasks and working towards them one by one. Any type
of goal can be achieved through gradually sectioning the bigger tasks into
small achievable units such that when all are achieved, you will have achieved
your desired goal.
With all these said and done, there is a killer
of dreams that I would like to briefly mention. This is procrastination; the
thief in the night. Procrastination is the act of putting off things planned
for now to later. Simpler, procrastination is postponing. I would encourage you
to always do what you are supposed to do today, today. If this does not make
any sense, do what you have to do now rather than later because later, there
will be something else that needs to be done and you will probably end up with
a pile of things not done, goals not achieved and dreams not discovered.
So if you want to really be on top of your game
and achieve what you set out, then you better start crunching your key board
and do that assignment that you were to do yesterday, take out that trash you
were to do two days ago and write that email you were to send out in the course
of the day,NOW. For there is not provision for re-writing your past, you’d better
write your future and live out your present. Remember you need focus to
continue keeping up with the spirit and hence I leave you with a word from LL
Cool J, “Stay focused, go after your dreams and keep moving toward your goals.”
