Campus life is fazed by a
myriad of activities. Everyday something new comes up and we always have to
keep up with it. It’s very difficult in this time and age to know what is
happening all around you. We are so engrossed in our mobile phones that at
times life can just pass us by without noticing. We are either double tapping
or scrolling. This is an outcry of how communication has been thrown out of the
gutter because of these merciless phones that do not give people the chance to
speak to each other.
Ever sat down after meeting
new people and felt out of place the second you introduced yourself. Not
because you met new people but because you could not talk to anyone after since
everyone was on their phones seemingly busy enough not to engage you in a talk.
I wonder, really where did we go wrong in terms of communicating? Is it because
we find it easier communicating with people who are not in close proximity or
is it because it is easier texting than saying words?
I sometimes find it funny when
it’s all quiet then an engagement ensues from a funny- probably shared a
thousand and one times, photo sent from WhatsApp. The best that we could do is
to dig up some funny photos from our groups, showcase to others as if you were
a comedian delivering a punch line on the podium and once in a while explain a
joke as we all laugh about. Could we just engage ourselves better as humans?
Technology is a good thing, regardless, it has left us cold hearted, out of remorse
and communication deficient.
Charlie Chaplain in his greatest speech ever said
that machinery will ruin the very core of mankind. Where we cannot associate
anymore through the uttering of words, where machines have given us replaceable
objects of satisfaction and where we humans will have no control over our lives
no more.
One of the greatest icons in
the movie industry was scared that one day we would never talk to each other
because of being brain washed by technology. For all the good reasons,
technology is good, but for all the bad reasons that make us not to interact on
a face to face level, then we can call it bad. Nevertheless, I still encourage
us to move with technology as it is an ever changing thing but we should not
lose the very humanity that has been engraved in our hearts. We should always
communicate and share with people on an interactive level where our machines do
not hinder us from saying or sharing something.
